Basis for success: committed employees and innovative solutions
“Essential success factors are the loyalty, commitment and high work quality of our employees”, says Martin Stich, Technical CEO at WITRON. “In times of a highly competitive job market, it is our goal and our responsibility as an employer to offer our colleagues perspectives with meaningful tasks and forward-looking social benefits and retain them to the company in the long-term”.
A reason to celebrate: 1,000 COMs sold
In January 2019, the Australian food retailer, Coles, and WITRON have signed a contract for the construction of two Omni-Channel distribution centers - the first automated WITRON logistics project in the Southern Hemisphere. This has also been a reason for another landmark: the sale of the thousandth COM machine - the center piece of WITRON’s OPM system. OPM is considered the most successful fully automated case storage and order picking system within the logistics processes of food retail across the globe.
WITRON is now already building the sixth fully automated frozen food logistics center for the market-leading Spanish food retailer, Mercadona. At the beginning of March 2019, both parties signed the contract for the design and implementation of the fully automated system in Guadix (province of Granada, South Spain). The distribution center will be equipped with the latest OPM technology. All logistics processes are optimized in real-time. After the operational start at the beginning of 2021, the logistics center will supply 224 Mercadona stores throughout Andalusia. In total, WITRON with its mechanized logistics systems will then be responsible for the storage and picking of frozen goods for more than 80% of all 1,630 Mercadona stores in Spain.
The system with a size of 189,400 square feet is equipped with 7 fully automated COM machines and will pick up to 46,000 cases every day out of an assortment of 550 items at -23 degrees Celsius onto pallets - store-friendly and without errors.
The Swedish food retailer Axfood has signed a Letter of Intent with WITRON for the design and realization of a new Omni-Channel distribution center. One of the largest and most modern logistics centers in Europe will be built northwest of Stockholm. Starting in 2023 the new logistics facility will supply 1,000+ Axfood stores and all Axfood-E-Commerce customers with more than 22,000 different dry goods, fresh products, and frozen food.
In addition to high cost-efficiency, the facility with a size of more than 100,000 square meters / 1,100,000 square feet places special emphasis on environmental friendliness and sustainability. “We are building for the future”, says Klas Balkow, President and CEO of Axfood. “The new logistics center will generate additional competitive advantages for Axfood and at the same time create logistics synergies within the company group. We are investing in a flexible solution to meet the needs of both our stores and our E-Commerce customers.
